Tisbury Storage Facility
Protecting Southland's taonga for generations to come.
Invercargill’s museum collection contains almost four million items. While the footprint of our city’s new museum is set to be larger than that of the Southland Museum and Art Gallery, it simply is not feasible to have each item within the collection on public display at all times.
After assessing 18 sites throughout the city, Council selected the Tisbury Reserve as the location for Invercargill’s new museum collection storage facility.
The Tisbury Storage Facility was completed in December 2023. Our 1650m2 facility includes:
State-of-the-art shelving for various objects
Temperature-controlled storage areas
Offices and workrooms
A public space where the community can view items for research purposes, by appointment
The Tisbury Storage Facility was built by contractors ABL. Once the build was finished, the transfer of taonga to the new facility from the Southland Museum and Art Gallery began. This process is expected to be completed in early 2024.
